Another trick that I learned with my '86 Suburban is to power the relay coil through 
the oil pressure switch.  That way, the trailer battery cannot "drain" (read, get feed 
from) the Suburban battery/alternator until the engine is running.

I have had to replace my solenoid after many years, and was sold an "intermittent" 
rated unit, much to my chagrin.  Had to replace it soon afterward.  Be sure to get a 
continuous duty solenoid for this service.
