Re: [A/S] Lock
It's unfortunate that you think that the price of the door latch is "highway
robbery". Airstream's are unique and longer lasting than nearly any RV built.
Unfortunately one company can not make all the components require to build
something as complex as an RV. This results in the builder relying on other
companies to manufacturer parts. If one of those companies goes out of business
the builder has two choices, either abandon their customers or come up with an
alternative. For those folks that have a 77 or newer Airstream the alternative
turned out to be a poorly fit replacement. In the case of the 70-77 (-79 Argosy)
Airstream chose to find someone to continue building original parts. Because the
parts are not needed in the volume used during production, the prices are
naturally higher. And while it may not be the economical alternative, it is
better than reskinning the door or junking the entire trailer. Most of us
recognize the age and unique nature of an Airstream will sometimes lead to costly
parts. If that seems unreasonable, then this may not be the project for you.
