Dave,
You did not mention what kind of converter you had.  If you have a 
"univolt" they are rather simple to repair.  The main problem is a 
capacitor goes bad after about 20 or 25 years.  I have a step by step 
piece on the repair of this unit if you wish to have it.  It will cost 
between $15 and $25 if your unit is similar to the one in my 76 Trade 
Wind.    The part is sold by most Motor Rewind shops of a Air 
Conditioner shop.
