I second Charlie's analysis and recommended solution. I too have a 
1979. Replaced the faltering  UniVolt with a Intelli-Power (with Charge 
Wizard) last summer. It handles our two new glass mat batteries well. 
The Intelli-Power plugs in to a wall outlet as did the UniVolt.
Intelli-Power is manufactured by Progressive Dynamics of Marshall, MI. 
The folks there recommended the 60 amp model for our 31' International 
Sovereign (with air conditioner). It is retailed on the net and on 
Ebay.
