If I have my years right by '79 the converter was plugged into a wall 
socket as it is today. Not hearing the humming suggests you need to 
double check the AC circuit breakers to see if the one that feeds that 
circuit is ON. If it is you should check the socket the converter is 
plugged into. The AC indicator light is fed by a tap off the output of 
the converter through a small amperage fuse located on the converter
If the AC in is OK then the converter may well have given up the ghost 
and need to be replaced. The IntelliPower line has been popular for use 
as a replacement.
