My guess is that you are not hooked into a 30amp
circuit.  If this is the case then you may have fried
the compressor since it is laboring and not getting
enough power to run properly.  I have read a lot about
this on www.airstreamforums.com.  Your local RV repair
shop is probably correct.  The best solution is to
have a 30amp service installed where you are hooking
up, just make sure the electrician realizes that you
want 110v not 220v.  Unfortunately you may have to
replace the A/C unit.
