[A/S] '69 heater sputter

hi all,

i'm back on the airstream list after a bit of an absence. i finally
have time to work on the ol' beast again!

i'm wondering if anyone knows much about heaters in a 1969 model
overlander. i can start it fine, and it runs great, but when it is
"idling" (when the temperature reaches the desired amount and the
heater shuts off), it sputters and pops and sometimes booms. i looked
inside and i can see that the main jets do not shut off quite all the
way, and have flames flickering on them when the heater is idling.

sadly the heater sections is missing from my owners manual. does
anyoen know how to adjust the main jets, or clean whatever valve
controls their operation?

the spluttering, aside from being scary and dangerous, also causes
the heater to heat up enough to keep the blower motor on all the
time, thus depleting the battery faster than needed.

thanks in advance!
