That thin metal strip is probably the "shunt" for the ammeter. An
Ammeter is always in series with the load; many have internal shunts,
but external shunts like yours are very common. Such a setup allows the
shunt to be located where it's convenient for connecting the heavy
wires, yet light-guage wires can run from the shunt to the meter itself.
The sliding bolt is an adjustment for calibration purposes.
You're right about the built-in meters, they're pretty useless.
