The metal strip is a shunt for the ammeter. You may adjust it to calibrate, 
if you wish the relative accuracy of the ammeter. Any battery condition 
meter, that does not have a load bank, is simply a volt meter. A voltmeter 
will not give you the true
condition of the battery, but only a relative reading. The only true test of 
a battery, is with a load bank, which is usually a non inductive load placed 
on it for a very short period of time. A voltmeter test, without a load can 
give you an excellent reading, when in fact it may be a surface charge and 
not the true, at the moment remaining capacity of the battery.   Andy
