Re: [VACList] Returning member howdy

I can relate to the brake problem. On my '73 Ambassador the brakes looked fine,
though I'm no brake expert but they looked good to me. NAPA was able to match
parts for me and I kept them working, some how for a few years. Most of the time
they worked well at least on trips they did, but when I'd get back in town close
to home they would tend to fade and then I'd look them over again, but was still
puzzled. Then on a trip to Destin when the A/C finally died, we were on our way
home with a side trip to drop the trailer of to Walt in Ocala, FL. Well the
brakes worked ok, but then at some point on the way someone pulled out in front
of me and the brakes didn't do much at all. We made it to Walt's and since he was
going to have the trailer for a few days I asked him to check them out. Turns out
the magnets were about shot, he recommended changing the backing plates and all
since mine were still the original ones. So had them all changed and the brakes
work great, a lot firmer than they ever were before. Price wise, changing the
backing plates and all are expensive, but I think I'd rather spend the money on
that than having to repair the front of my tow vehicle.
