I've found that my '79 vintage Dometic will stay cold for at leat one 
hour when shut off.  If the intended destination is only about an 
hour away we won't bother with the LP.

If traveling for a longer time we will run on LP and I don't consider 
it to be dangerous.  I'll fuel up the tow vehicle before leaving to 
avoid having to shut off the fridge before entering a gas station, 
and so far all destinations have been within a full tank of fuel.
