We travel also with a small generator.   Just read your manual it 
should answer
all the questions you have ..   As for the gas,  keep your tank full 
and a small
one gallon can to refill it.   You can rig a spot along your truck box 
to strap it off.
Let it cool a little before you fill it with fresh gas or put it in 
your truck.
If you are not going to use it for a couple of months add some gas 
treatment to the
tank to keep the gunk out.
Keep it simple and have fun...
