I fixed a black tank a couple of years ago with a patch and it held up well.  
I drilled an 1/8 inch hole at each end of the crack to keep it from spliting 
furthur, scuffed the heck out of the surface with coarse sand paper and 
cleaned it well with alcohol.  When applying the patch it generated a 
tremendous amount of heat so obviously there is a strong chemical reaction 
after mixing the epoxy.  I also extended the patch 3 inches or so from the 
edge of the crack.  It held well for me.
