Thanks Mike, very good explanations. I do think you guys mix up most of us 
when you talk about the internals of an alternator and do not consider the 
diodes part of the alternator. The complete alternator package including 
the built-in diodes produces DC as can be witnessed with a multi-meter on 
the output. Years ago I would change the diodes, but now I just buy the 
complete alternator and let the re-builders change the diodes and resell 
the units.
