Jerry,

The radio gets the station id's from a thing called RDS or Radio Data
System.  RDS data is transmitted within the radio staton's frequency
allocation and is decoded by special circuitry in your radio.

It allows radio stations to send their name, type of music ie. jazz, rock,
etc.  They can even send the current song and artist information, but rarely
do.

Your radio also may have a setting to automatically find a rock or jazz,
etc.. It uses the RDS infromation to find this.

Not all radio stations are capable of sending the RDS signal.
