I bought a generator last year to run my air conditioner which is a Coleman 
TX 1987 model year. It requires a generator like the one I got which is the 
Onan Microquiet 3600 LP that runs off my propane tanks on the front of the 
trailer. I had to install the generator in the very back of my pickup. This 
thing is HEAVY (174 LBS). To get it all to work I cut an exhaust hole in the 
side top of my bed cap and ran it out the hole which has a closeable door and 
had an exhaust pipe made to fit at a local muffler shop the door cannot close 
when the exhaust pipe is attached.  I also purchased a remote switch(Onan) so 
I can start it from inside the trailer. When I am ready to actually use the 
generator I take my main electrical hookup from the back bumper of the 
trailer that is used for campground electricity and pull it to my trucks back 
bumper where I have a pigtail hooked up to my generator. I do not have to 
unhook from my hitch. I have a propane line that is the standard rubber type 
that is also hooked up already to the generator. All I do is attach it to the 
propane tank and I'm ready to go. You see, in the summer I use almost no 
propane for any thing else. The GenSet has an electric start so I have a 
power line that runs to my trailers battery to start it. The unit is started 
and stopped by the remote start button inside the trailer. It took a lot of 
planning but it pays off on hot days when boondocking. It just takes about 10 
min to complete the hookup required when I first go to use it. I have a 
diesel truck and didn't want to mess with gasoline for the generator. I tried 
to find a good location on or in the trailer for mine but there was not 
enough space. I have a 23 foot, 87 model trailer. Airstream said that even if 
I had a hitch and a platform added in the very back behind the trailers 
bumper it may cause an unbalanced situation and swaying while driving.
I don't know if it is all legal, but there is little help out there that I 
could find for answers. This works and it makes me happy! As long as I don't 
end up in a huge fireball. So far so good. Hope this gives some of you ideas, 
maybe you can tell me a better way, I'm listening.
