Drill the appropriate size hole in a spare gas cap, and seal some 
kind of fitting in it that a hose can slip over.  It has to be an air 
tight seal.  One guy used a schraeder valve like you'd mount in a mag 
wheel. Then run a hose from that fitting through a hole in the gas 
can's cap, or in the case of the outboard tank to the hose connection 
there.  The external tank has to be vented.

As the fuel level in the Honda tank drops, it creates a vacuum above 
the fuel, and sucks fuel up from the external tank, through the hose, 
and into the Honda tank.  Normally, it just sucks air in the vent.

This gets around the problem of mounting the tank higher than the 
generator and using gravity feed into the Honda tank, which might 
create more head pressure than the carburetor's float lungs could 
stop with the needle valve.

The one thing I might do different is use 1/8" hose so the weight of 
the fuel being lifted would be much less than that in 1/4" hose.

Two reports of this system working well so far.
