Re: [A/S] "Tornado Warning"
Terry,
As a NWS trained Skywarn storm spotter, please heed my and others advice
and do not ever ride out the storm in your Airstream. The trailer is
probably the nearest thing to the worst possible place to be in a tornado,
the worst being standing outside in the open. As you enter the park and
look around, find any brick, cinder block, stone or other significant
structure that might be in the park. It is better if it is small, as long
as you are there first. Even a wood building with a small room near the
center is better than a trailer or RV. Better yet if the room is a
bathroom, as the walls get some reinforcement from the plumbing.
If there are no significant buildings in the park, get in the car and
locate the nearest significant building. Plan on that building being your
safety plan. If the building should be locked, and you know the tornado is
heading right toward you, open the door with the car and get inside, in the
center of the building near or in a small room and cover up with anything
you can find. Most all deaths from tornados are from flying debris, protect
yourself from that debris. You and the owner can settle on the door damage
after the storm.
If all else fails, or you absolutely do not have time to get to a building,
locate the nearest ditch, wash, hole or some depression in the earth, get
in and cover up with something. Getting wet in a ditch covered with
blankets, mattresses, plywood or anything is better than the aluminum weenie.
Remember, the best plans are just being aware of your surroundings.
