Jack - For once maybe I can answer a question for you. Re your question
on how to remove the cover plate on your Propane Detector - the answer
is to just take a good hold and pull. The molded (built-in) grabbers
that hold it tight are on the right & left sides. Mine finally came off
when I was grasping the bottom & top.

Now, you might ask, why was I so intent on pulling the cover off my
propane detector? Well, on my trail ride back in February, I was jerked
out of a deep sleep at something like 2:00 am by this periodic and
horribly loud chirp. MUCH worse than the chirp of the smoke / fire
detector. I checked the smoke detector, not there. In my sleep fog, I
finally remembered the propane detector, so I tried pushing the reset
button. No good. Off goes the chirp, and chirp, and chirp. LOUD, major
CHIRPING. So fearing I was subject to being gassed to death, I turned
the gas bottles off and mooched a bed from a lady friend parked next to
me (NO comments, please. Hunter runs a family site here). But the darn
thing chirped so loud I could hear it in that camper next door! 
Next day my propane detector was the subject of a lot of slimy chat
around the morning cook fire, so we all trouped to my Safari to check it
out. Some knowledgeable soul determined there was no escaping propane,
announced that the detector was obviously faulty and disconnected it
(pulled & cut the wires). After the trail ride was over, I took the
Safari to the dealer (to fix those brakes, remember that sad story?) and
they confirmed the thing was in fact faulty.

The short answer Tom is to just keep pulling. It'll come off. It is the
inside guts that screw to the wall.
