My guess is that it probably might be fused
internally.  For safety sake I can't see a device not
having some protection.  I think the answer is getting
that cover off....without ripping it off the wall. 
Unfortunately I'm not working with a nice oak wall
like you have.  My luck I'll end up pulling the entire
unit off the wall stripping the screws and holes.
