I also have 79 31'.
I changed my own shocks a few months back. After starting the job, If I could 
have gotten my hands around the idiot that designed the way they are mounted 
I would have strangled him. 
They are very difficult to remove and replace. In doing so, I discovered that 
the bushing for the upper end of the shock has to be removed from the shock,( 
this was done by whoever did it before) cut in half, and put in one half, 
then by an act of God get the shock over the shaft, then insert the other 
half of the busing and then somehow get the nut back on. You have maybe an 
1/8" clearance between the frame of the trailer and the bolt to remove the 
shock. I would hesitate on ever doing someone else's.
