Re: [A/S] Changing Shock Absorbers

AJ,

One of the more common dealer methods is to unbolt and lower the axle enough to allow a
more workable clearance. This is particularly important if one chooses to use the
Airstream specified shock.
The older Delco made shocks had split bushings which eased the job. The current Gabriel
made shocks do not have the split bushing.
We use a floor jack positioned on the frame between the wheels on one side and unbolt
and lower one axle at a time. The frequent and heavy use of penetrating oil is highly
recommended. This is also a good opportunity to adjust the brakes or even repack the
wheel bearings.
Using this procedure does not alter the axle alignment. Alignment is established by the
bend of the axle, not by it's position in the bolt holes in the frame.
