Maurice, from a Physics and Mechanics aspect, I would assume that the 
non-extended van would be a better tow vehicle (assuming all other 
specifications were the same).  With the hitch ball closer to the rear axle, 
the effect of lateral forces from the trailer "pushing" on the tow vehicle 
should be less.
