hi all!

thanks for the great advice on this. i was aware that it was 
potentially dangerous to have a sputtering heater, but i was hoping 
the fix was as easy as turning an adjustment screw. apparently not so.

can someone point me to replacement heaters, or give a bit of advice 
on replacement on the cheap? i'm pretty low budget.
