Check with the Quebec Motor Vehicle Registration office on this, but 
I don't think they need to see a trailer to register it.  They just 
need the serial number and the previous ownership.  You should be 
able to take an ownership from California, pass it by Customs (if 
it's vintage there probably isn't any duty, but probably will be GST) 
and Quebec Motor Vehicle Registration should issue you with a plate 
and registration certificate so that you can move it back to Canada.  
Nothing says that you have to move it.  This works in Ontario, but as 
I said, you need to check with Quebec MVR.  Hope this helps.
