The expensive surge-suppressors (~$250.00 and up) are actually UPS's
(Uninterruptable Power Supply) - they contain a heavy-duty battery, like a
gel-cell, which provides a few minutes of 110VAC power in the event of a
power outage. They also provide 'clean' AC power at all times... Normally
used with computers and such, to provide time to save work and shut down
normally in the case of a power outage. When used in the rv/trailer, i plug
it into an outlet nearest the units (tv/vcr, satellite receiver, computer)
which are most sensitive to power fluctuations...

I suppose it would be possible to run the 110VAC to the Charger/Converter
(Univolt, IntelliPower, Magnatek) from the UPS, although i don't think that
12vdc equipment is all that sensitive to power fluctuations... if your
110VAC goes out, the trailer's battery(ies) kick in anyway, right?
