[A/S] Power requirements

Okay, my greenness is going to show with this question. So, please bear with 
me! 
I have a 50 amp plug, with adapters for  30 and 15 amp hookups. As a newbie, 
I've only hooked up to 30 amp campground outlets. Here's my question -- I was 
going to try to hook up at home using an extension cord to an outlet in the 
garage. That way, we can run the A/C while packing. Can I do this? And, how 
do I determine if it will burn out my A/C? Do I need a special extension 
cord?
