The Ultima 2020 controller is connected to the electrical system just
like the pendulum types, but instead of depending on the pendulum to
sense the tow vehicle slowing to send voltage to the trailer, it has a
small steel cable that runs from the unit to the arm of the brake
peddle. This cable senses motion of the brake peddle and applies voltage
proportional to the travel of the brake peddle. The unit is tunable to
change the amount of voltage applied for any given amount of brake
peddle travel. This setting is what you set when you go through the
setup procedure when you first install the unit. It is just a little
slide switch on the side of the unit. There is a big red button on the
front that can be used to apply the max. voltage you have set on the
unit for a manual mode of operation if you wish to stop without touching
the tow vehicle brake peddle.
The unit must be mounted firmly on the dash where the cable run can have
a reasonably straight path to the arm the brake peddle where it gets
connected. There is a small clamp that fastens to the arm at a point
where the arm moves about 3/4 of an inch for the full range of brake
peddle travel.
This may not be clear to everyone, but it is not complicated, and seems
to work very well.
