[A/S] Airstream Shocks

Al,

I haven't made any attempt to determine what shocks will fit newer A/Ss but
I recently went through the process and found that NAPA gas deluxe shocks,
part number 94005, will fit vintage A/Ss. They cost about $18/shock. The
NAPA shocks are replacements for the front shocks of Chevy 1/2 ton pickups
of the '60s and '70s. Wally Byam probably selected a shock that was widely
available and affordable.

You might take one shock off and take it to a NAPA or other parts dealer and
ask for the shock referenced above. At the counter, compare the top and
bottom mountings and measure the extended and compressed lengths. My guess
is they will fit because from at least the early '60s all A/Ss, with the
possible exception of the very small and lightweight Bambis, used the same
dura-torque axles manufactured by Henschen.

Please advise the list what you learn so we can add that fact to the
storehouse of knowledge available on the AirsteamList and the VACList. Many
members including myself own newer A/S trailers as well as the vintage
units.
