This has been discussed here many times of course, but we always have 
newcomers who need the info. I do not know the specific weight of a
79 Safari, but the weight of the tralier depends on length and load. 
There might be a dry weight posted on the inside of one of the
closets of the trailer and there may be a GVWR for the trailer on the 
VIN plate on the frame, but the best way to tell is to put it on a 
scale and weigh it. With respect to your Cherokee, you are unlikely
to receive support for it as a good choice for a tow vehicle due to
its short wheel base and relatively light weight. It probably has 
enough power to pull the Safari, but because of those other factors 
you are apt to experience other problems which would make a high 
dollar hitch or a longer heavier vehicle options you should consider.
