Some converters put out up to 16 or 17 volts when there is no battery or a
light current load.  This can damage your appliance circuit boards, radio,
TV etc.if the battery is disconnected with the converter on.  There are
several smart chargers that provide regulated output voltages regardless of
the load and these can fully operate the rig with or without the battery.
Full size Solar Panels put out 18+ volts under no load conditions.  This is
why the refrigerator manufacturers do not want you to use the 12 volt wires
that are attached to the fridge for the Solar Panels.  This is not a problem
if you use a solar regulator which limits the output voltage to a safe value
regardless of the load or battery connection.
