Remember, the converter also provides 12VDC for lights, etc. as well as
battery charging when the trailer is on shore power.  You can (and I do)
run the converter without a battery installed, to provide 12V lighting. 
I don't see anything in the manual that says not to do that.

In this case, power to the converter comes from the battery bank
(solar-charged) through an inverter that feeds the 120VAC circuits..
