Hey Jim:

The ammonia shouldn't escape.  It's a sealed system.

There you will find almost everything you need in order to understand 
what your fridge is all about.  Jim Dunmyer may be traveling.  He would 
advise you to check out this site as well.  Can't hurt and the price is 
right.

The ideal thing would be to have someone fix the leak by possibly 
replacing part of the guts.  If that's not possible, it sounds like time 
for another unit.  

Electric-only or not is a decision that only you can make.
