After reading Bill's latest post, another possibility came to mind.  Bill, when
you say "weight on the ball"--maybe there is confusion over *weight* vs.
*compression*.  The ball definitely experiences a compression force, being the
focal point of the force generated by the tensioning of the bars, but the entire
hitch assembly, (both elements--including trailer tongue and tow vehicle hitch
platform) transfer *weight* away onto the front axel of the tow vehicle and to
the axel(s) of the trailer.

Once again--more compression on the ball--less weight on the hitch assembly
itself.
