Charlie,
 A friend had a brand new Suburban that got caught in a hail storm and
was severely damaged. The insurance company, body shop, or someone, sent
a fella to my friend's house to repair the dents. My friend wasn't able
to watch, as I think the guy was kinda secretive, but he apparently used
some sort of heat/cold technique as you describe, and it worked very
well.
