Dave:
	The Univolt converter is a Ferro Magnetic Resonance regulated power
supply.  The one in my a/s is 11.5 volt so you can leave it on all the
time and not boil a battery.  The major drawback is that it does not
have the voltage to put a fast charge on a battery.  
	I think there are two ways to quiet down the converter.  One cost money
and not to much time, the other cost time and not to much money.  
	If you replace the capacitors, to capacitors of the same value will not
actually be the same you may (Underline may) change the resonance point
so the hum is not as bad as it is now.  Some day when they go bad, you
will have to do this.  This is easy work.  The capacitors will cost
about $20.00 each and they are fastened in with one screw and connected
with fastons.  If you are good with a screwdriver, it should not take
more than 20 minutes.
	The second noise suppression will be to remove the transformer and dunk
it in varnish.  A motor repair shop may have a special kind but what
ever you have in the basement will do (not paint).   Put the transformer
in the varnish and let is set until it quits bubbling air out of it and
then turn it over and do it again.  Then let it hang over the can until
it quits dripping and then bake it in a 150 to 175 degree oven for
several hours.  This will glue the transformer laminations back together
and make the converter quiet.  It will also make a mess when you spill
the varnish and stink up the house when you bake out.  
	While you are in there, put a switch on the main 120 AC line.  You do
not need to run the converter all the time.  This is really true if you
let is sit in the yard over the winter.
	The Univolt is a good converter.  I tested mine and the output voltage
did not very but 1/2 volt when the input power went from 40 volts to 130
volts.  I did not want to push the voltage above 130.
