That's what it sounded like to me.  The shop I was in talked to Cummins/Onan in
Phoenix, and apparently they are a bit renowned locally for their high prices. 
But probably they boosted it too.  I got the impression they didn't want the
work.

I wouldn't think the install would be that difficult, provided the remote
control wiring matches up.  The unit I have is not a slide-out (most of the
newer ones are) but it does sit on a tray secured in the compartment by only
four bolts ... I think two husky guys could manhandle it out (and back in, using
a ramp) but a forklift would be easier, and I have access to one.  First
question of course is, will the newer unit fit inside the compartment?  but I
rather suppose that if anything it is smaller than the old one.

Wouldn't know that without looking at the installation manual for the new one. 
The remote control setup is part of the original installation and so dates back
to 1978.  I don't suppose it has changed in any fundamental way since, but I
presume Onan can tell me that.

BTW I do have the original owner manuals for the old unit.

Yep.  I think first order of business is probably to remove the old unit, pull
the heads and find out whether there is anything dire, or whether it just needs
cleanup and reassembly.

Biggest problem is the working conditions.  I don't have an enclosed garage for
the MH, and right now it is shit cold when the sun isn't shining.  Temperature
down in the 20s at night, and any time the wind blows (which is most of the
time) everything gets full of dust and grit.
