Have you actually pulled the generator out to the point that you can
pull the generator away from the engine?  I doubt seriously that there
is anything major going on since you had it running before the lockup.
Once you separate the generator and the engine, you can figure out
where the blockage is and work from there. That Onan is a good machine
that should not be in bad shape, given reasonable maintenance.
