Re: [VACList] Toilet Removal?

Elisa,

As Neal said the back bolt is in the left rear corner. Lift the cover and seat
and you will find a hole or plug in a hole. This can be used as a sight hole
or a tool access hole. You will need a 1/2" deep socket or just reach around
with a 1/2" box wrench and look though the hole as you work.

But, and most important, you should remove the water feed line before you
loosen the toilet. When you disconnect the water line fitting be very careful
that you use two wrenches. Trying to break loose the flared copper fitting
without a second wrench will inexorably twist and break the copper line. (been
there, done that).

In fact, while you are looking for the sight hole you might as well take the
lid/seat off because as you will find the hinge that the lid/seat is mounted
on is part of the vacuum break. Weird but true. To remove the lid/seat look to
the middle of the hinge for two either steel or plastic (depending on age)
pins. The pins are removed using needle nose pliers by gripping them and
pulling in toward the middle.

Actually they do build the coach around the toilet. Consider for a moment that
the drain line from toilet to tank is the only hole through the floor that has
to align two large components, and since the tanks are put in first they drill
the hole through for the toilet before they flip it over and start the rest of
the process.

The vacuum breakers for the old Galaxy/Starlite series toilet are no longer
being made and are getting scarce. But the vacuum break it's self can be fixed
easily with a part that is still available. Once you have taken the toilet
out, flip it over. The vacuum break is at the top in back and attached with
just two (I think) screws. Remove screws and clamped on plastic lines and
remove from toilet. Once out, remove all those screws around the edge and you
will see the cause of all your trouble. It is a little float thingy sitting
inside. Cost about $1.50 or so. The replacement is not exactly like the
original, it has an added piece sticking up on top. Simply cut that off and
drop it in the old spot and reassemble the WHOLE thing. No more leak.
