Suggest before you do any fixing on your '77 that you get Airstream 
Bulletin Number 29 which is about fixing this problem.  The main effort 
is installation of a frame rail reinforcing plate especially developed by 
airstream for this fix.  It will require removing wheels and axles to 
install.  Don't let any one  with  welding  equipment say they can fix 
this problem by welding on some metal to the frame.  Odds are it won't do 
the job.  The bulletin tells you what to do and how.    See if you can 
get it direct from Airstream and if not have a dealer request it for you. 
 The bulletin actually went out to dealers and authorized repair shops.
