[VAC] smoke stains-can they be removed?

Hi,

I just bought my first Airstream, 1973 31 ft Sovereign, and the interior
is heavily stained by tobacco smoke. I've tried just about everything I
can think of to try and clean it with only fair results. The interior is
original, including the carpets, and I plan on restoring it over the
next couple of years so I don't really want to use paint, or is that my
only option.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
