Gil:
A couple of years ago I had some problems with the gears and they were
available from the original mfg. (some where in Michigan) and I had to
splice the cable after determining that I would probably pull the
cable in half before the new cable would be in place... I have no idea
what was holding the process up... I used one of the newer connectors
that require a special tool to install, but seemed much sturdier than
the radio shack models... I used two male and a bullet, but if you
could find the proper genders you would eliminate one of the
connections... I have not had any problems with the new cable install
(all outside of the trailer) and the replacement gears still work
well... ( I have about 8" or so of the old cable sticking out from
under the old antenna... )

You could insulate the connections with shrink tube or some of the new
 tape that seals to itself)
