I had some JB Weld and so tried it, patching the compartment on both 
the inside and outside surfaces. I hadn't read your suggestion and 
didn't think to stop drill the crack - that is a great idea, though I 
don't think I could have reached the crack with a drill since it was on 
the bottom in the corner.  The JB Weld has had 2 days to dry and now 
the big test is coming: will the weight of the battery open the crack 
up? I'll let you know how it goes.
