While I am a big diesel engine fan, I'm not sure it makes sense to buy a
diesel now if your only reason for doing so is to save money because they
get better gas mileage.

Considering that a diesel engine costs at least $4,000 more than a gas
engine, and that diesel fuel is now quite a bit more expensive than
gasoline, I seriously doubt that you'd ever get your money back even
considering increased fuel mileage.

We're going through the same decision in buying a new truck.  In our case,
we'll be buying a 1-ton dually because we'll also be carrying a slide-in
truck camper in the bed of the pickup.  As much as we love the Dodge with
the Cummins, it simply does not have the payload we need for both a truck
camper and a trailer, so that leaves us with either the Chevy/GMC or Ford.
We've just about decided on the Ford V10 because it has the highest payload
of any of the "Big 3." If we were going to buy a diesel, we'd probably go
with the Chevy/GMC Duramax with the Allison transmission.
