Your first sentence is accurate, but you proceed to make a mountain out 
of a mole hill. Or, in this case, a gopher hole. For many years "septic" 
systems were actually "cesspools" -- holes in the ground, with redwood 
liners to keep them from caving in, into which effluent of all kinds 
drained. It decomposed and drained into the surrounding earth. I know of 
a number of those still in operation, having been working fine for 
perhaps a hundred years.

Disposal of gray water into (not ONTO) the ground is a safe practice, 
unless it is very near a watercourse. That statement is not politically 
correct these days, but it is true.
