James,
I have a Smart Tire system on my 76 Trade Wind.  It cost about $325.00 4 
years ago.  This is about 1/3 the cost of replacing the back corner 
aluminum piece and patching the wheel well fender.
I have had no trouble since I bought the system
I will always have it.  It is cheep insurance.
$6 or 700 should buy new tires and the Smart Tire.
