I have done basically the same thing. If you need to go the cheap
route, make sure you buy what is called a trickle charger, you can
get one at
Walmart. I had a plug already in place for the Univolt, the hot
clamp is on the positive battery terminal and the black is grounded
to the trailer. It has been like that for 2 years and gives me
absolutely no trouble. I have 3 Univolts in my storage room that I
haven't even bothered checking out. It stays on shore power all the
time.
