Welcome to the fellowship of the road!  Fuel  prices notwithstanding, this is 
as good as it gets!

Depends on your tastes.  If you like nature, state and federal parks have more 
of it than most private campgrounds, campsites usually are farther apart and may 
be separated from one another by vegetation, and usually are cheaper.  If you are 
_really_ antisocial, state and national forests and BLM lands are even better.  

If on the other hand you like to be close and to have "entertainment" on site 
(swimming pools, playgrounds, games), private campgrounds are what you are going 
to prefer.

And if you merely need a place to park overnight, many people use Wal-Mart, truck 
stops, or other such parking lots.

The problem is finding what you want.  No available directory lists nearly all the 
campsites.  Governments generally actively promote their campsites with brochures 
(welcome centers, etc.) and on their maps.  Private campground associations list 
their members in Trailer Life and Woodall's directories -- but many private 
campgrounds are not members.  These printed resources have www equivalents which 
sometimes are more up-to-date, and cheaper if you already have the electronics.  
The web also is full of additional resouces, such as MapsOnUs.

But even with all these resources, there remain many campgrounds which noone lists.  
You can drive down almost any highway, and if you watch for little signs by the side 
of the road, find many unlisted camps.  Of course, some are luxurious, and not a few 
are unlisted for good reasons.  For some people, finding the nicer unlisted camps is 
part of the adventure of the road.

Hang in with this list -- if you tell the members where you want to camp, and what 
kind, they certainly will give you all sorts of suggestions.
