RE: [A/S] 1972 power converter is out Suggested Replacement

Jennie,

Get yourself a Progressive Dynamics Inteli-Power 9145A converter and a
Charge Wizard attachment.

The 9145 is a 45 amp unit, which should be more than adequate. For a few
dollars more you can get a 55 (or 60) amp unit. Physically they are the
same size.

The best buy is a factory rebuilt/refurbished unit which carries a
manufacturer's guarantee (which is a shorter time period than a new one)
However, with solid state electronics "infant mortality" is usually the
primary risk. If it doesn't die within the first few months, it will likely
last a very long time.

To order one go to the web site www.progressivedyn.com. The rebuilt ones
are a little hard to find. Click on Service Department and then the menu
which comes up and click on Hot Deals.

You can get the Charge Wizard direct, also, but you pay the full list. If
you have a Camping World club membership, the Charge Wizard will be cheaper
there.

The Inteli-Power/Charge Wizard is far superior to the original Airstream
Univolt converter. Much lighter, completely quiet (except when putting out a
lot of power which causes a whisper fan (relatively quiet) to kick in).
Also, the modern converter is much easier on your battery(s) and will not
over charge them but can also fast charge them if they are very low. It will
handle one or more 12 volt batteries connected in parallel.

If you want to have the "shore power on light" functioning on your control
panel, I can tell you how to do it with a few parts from Radio Shack.

It is not difficult to replace the power converter.

Good luck,

Oliver Filippi
