Daisy,
White LED's require about 3 volts to work.  This is higher voltage than 
red which only require about 1.7 volts.  If you had 13 volts on one of 
them it would burn up in less than a second.  That is why you put the 
resistor in series with them.
 I would think that you were just working them to hard.  If you were to 
double the size of the resistor you would reduce the current flow by 
half.  This would also cut light output by half but should extend their 
life. 
The manufacture will give you the proper current flow in their data 
sheet.  Do not use the maximum.  Cut it back to less.  I would start 
with half and then increase it slowly.
I was going to send you a data sheet from a manufacture but decided not 
to as it may be a larger file than you can download at this time.
